Senegalese Dream

In unfamiliar territory

I must confess, I’ve never been technologically inclined.  But in order to stay in touch with all of the wonderful people in my life, I’m stumbling blindly into this blog and I hope you enjoy it!

As many of you know (due to my incessant babbling on the subject….), on December 16th I received my invitation for Peace Corps service in Senegal as an Environmental Education Extension Agent.   My job description, according to what I have come to call the Pamphlet of Destiny – a.k.a. my invitation, is to “facilitate and empower school communities to work collectively to address the major environmental problems of their area through formal education, non-formal environmental education, and through the implementation of environmental conservation activities to improve their environment.”  Sounds good, I’ll take it!

The next step is staging, which will take place on February 26th, 2009 in a yet-to-be-discovered location.  Staging brings all of the invitees together for an orientation type situation that also includes other fun things like yellow fever vaccinations and information on our weekly malaria medication, which has such fabulous side-effects as nausea, dizziness, and insomnia.  Then finally on Feb. 27th, we all fly to Thies, Senegal to begin training for three months.

In the meantime, I am continuing my volunteer work, completing visa applications, mulling over something called my “aspiration statement,” and googling anything Senegal related with such fervor that I am beginning to worry myself.   Just so you’re all in the loop, I’ll detail the fruits of these searches in later posts….

So there it is, folks.
